The effect of visible light on the carcinogenicity of ultraviolet light.

Several investigators have reported that white light will counteract the effects produced in lower organisms exposed to ultraviolet light. Whitaker (14) has observed that the inhibitory effects of ul traviolet on fucus eggs could be counteracted by white light. Kelner (6)-has demonstrated spectac ular recoveries of various micro-organisms in activated with ultraviolet. Blum and Matthews (3) have also notedphoto-recovery fromthe effects of ultraviolet radiation in salamander lar vae. Wells and Giese (5, 13) have demonstrated photo-reversal in sperm and eggs of the sea urchin and in protozoa. In view of these findings on the photo-reactivation of physiological effects pro duced by ultraviolet light, the present study was initiated to determine the effect of simultaneous or subsequent exposure to visible light on ultra violet carcinogenesis in mice. The absence of light, according to Morton and associates (9, 10), enhances benzpyrene carcino genesis in several strains of mice. In other studies, however, these investigators (11) found that DBA strain mice maintained in visible light and painted with benzpyrene or methylcholanthrene developed a higher incidence of leukemia than did hydro carbon-treated mice kept in the dark. C3H mice exposed to ultraviolet light developed mammary tumors more rapidly than did those kept in either light or dark (4). Studies on the combined effect of ultraviolet and either bright light or the ab sence of light were not carried out. Rusch and as sociates have established the optimal wave length and energy exposure for the induction of ultra violet carcinogenesis in mice (1, 1@).
